Anhalt University of Applied Sciences Opens a Branch in Kazakhstan: Why German Expertise Is in High Demand

Anhalt University of Applied Sciences has opened a new international branch in Kazakhstan. In Almaty, the university’s new campus — Anhalt International University (AIU) — has officially begun its work. The launch became possible through a partnership with Energo University and the support of Kazakhstani institutions.

According to university representatives, interest in German applied education in Kazakhstan has been steadily growing. The country is undergoing active modernization of its industry, energy systems, and infrastructure — and there is a strong need for engineers trained according to international standards.

President of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Jörg Bagdahn, noted that Kazakhstan has enormous potential in the fields of energy, digitalization, and high-tech industries. Therefore, cooperation in education is a logical and mutually beneficial step for both sides.

At the AIU campus in Almaty, the first English-taught bachelor’s programs have already started — Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. The programs follow German academic standards, with a significant portion of courses taught by professors from Germany. Students will also have the opportunity to complete practical training and academic internships in Germany.

Rector of Energo University, Gani Nygymetov, emphasized that the partnership with Anhalt University will give Kazakhstani students access to modern engineering education, while allowing German faculty to implement scientific and educational projects in Central Asia.

In the coming years, both institutions plan to expand their cooperation, launch new programs, and develop joint research initiatives in the fields of energy, digital technologies, and automation.
